Kwabena Sekyi
If it isn't already apparent, everything about vintage inspires us. From film photography of beautiful beaches, to 80's fashion and iconic models - we savor it all. That is why we are ecstatic to have encountered Amsterdam based photographer Kwabena Sekyi Appiah-Nti.
Kwabena recently visited the stunning beaches of Brazil with his beautiful model and girlfriend Shunyata. They visited Copacabana Beach, Ipanema Beach, Abrico Beach and Barra Grande and shot our La Mare Collection.
A vintage vibe with a modern twist, Kwabena's images are sensational; radiating the stunning scenery of Brazil. We asked him a few questions for you. Here is our interview with Kwabena and you can view his website or Instagram for more of his work.
For the most part my inspiration comes from old, vintage movies and cult movies. Of course the things and people that I see in the streets, my girlfriend and the internet inspire me too.
I was born in Lelystad. It's a little city close to Amsterdam with not that much to do. I grew up playing outside with friends, skateboarding and playing basketball professionally. After high school I started going to college in Amsterdam, where I met a lot of creative, open-minded people. It made me realize that Lelystad wasn't the place for me to be anymore, so Amsterdam is the place I call home now.
I picked up a camera around the age of 17 and just did it as a hobby at first. The moment I really knew I wanted to be a photographer was when I was in my third year of college for multimedia design studies. I just thought to myself: I don’t want to do this for the rest of my life. So that's when I really decided to turn my hobby into a career and started looking at my photography professionally. I started putting more time and money into research, concepting and free work and people were starting to notice. I haven't slowed down ever since.
What is your favorite part about being a photographer?
My favorite part about being a photographer is definitely meeting new and interesting people, getting to discover new places and being able to actually create all the things that are floating around in my mind.
What would your perfect holiday look like?
Good food and surfing!!
